MOOREBANK Sports Magpies AFL Club has created history with its first- and reserve-grade teams making grand finals this Saturday at Blacktown Olympic Park. The club was known as the South-West Sydney Magpies from 1996 to 2007.
Three years ago Moorebank Sports Magpies were born.
No teams in any division under its new entity have made the Sydney AFL competition grand finals until this season.
The Mark Currant-coached reserve-grade team play Auburn Tigers at 10.30am. The Mark Coles-coached first grade team meet Penrith Rams at 12.40pm.
"This is the first time the club has made a grand final in any grade since 1997 when our reserves went down to Sydney Uni," Coles said. "It's also the first time we've made any grand finals under the Moorebank Sports Magpies banner."
Coles said both teams wanted to make to history winning first- and reserve-grade titles in the same year.
"I played in the losing South-West Sydney Magpies' grand final teams in 1996 and 1997 and I can still remember the bitter taste of those defeats," Coles said.
Blacktown Olympic Park is on Eastern Road at Rooty Hill.
