West Hoxton martial arts dynamo packs a mean punch

11 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
MARTIAL arts dynamo Hugh Matthews sure packs a mean punch and a strong kick.

His training partners and opponents will vouch for that.

The West Hoxton seven-year-old recently competed in the National All Styles State Titles at Ryde Aquatic Centre.

He triumphed in the point-fighting event to win the title for his age division.

Hugh, (pictured) who weighs a featherweight 25 kilograms, is a member of the JEVC/Liverpool RSL Youth Club which trains at Ashcroft High School on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Sensei Danny Goding is Hugh's instructor.

"Hugh has a lot of strength for a young boy, he's aggressive but measured and controlled," Goding said. "Hugh's been with us for 18 months and is doing well.

"I am sure there are more major titles in store for him. And the boy is always smiling, he's never got a smile off his face."

Earlier this year, Hugh also won several events at the Sydney Junior Games.

Hugh is a third dan brown belt.

"Hugh is also our first National All Styles State Title winner in the last five years," Goding said.
