West Hoxton boxer aims for the Olympics

01 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
KATIE Skinner is not your average girl next door. She loves a stoush.

The West Hoxton boxer floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee in the ring.

Skinner, 21, is currently ranked Australia's No.1 women's boxer in the light flyweight division.

She tips the scales at a feather-like 48 kilograms but hits like a heavyweight.

Skinner is competing at the Australian Championships in Hobart this week where she is defending her national title.

"I'm definitely fit and ready, especially after returning from a hand injury," she said.

"I had less time to train leading up to the fights but I had to push very hard in a short amount of time.

"My body was very sore but it has finally paid off as I'm feeling the fittest I've ever been."

Skinner's interest in boxing began at 14.

"My sister showed me the Rocky movies and I knew from that moment that boxing was something I wanted to get into but my mum didn't let me," she said.

"When I was 16, I was living with my dad and I asked him if I could start boxing and he said yes so I went to Parramatta PCYC and started training there."

In recent weeks she trained at Cabramatta PCYC getting ready for her bouts in Hobart. "I've been doing a lot of long sprinting, pad work and sparring," she said. "The fights are when you enjoy all your hard work and get to learn a lot about ways to improve yourself."

She is very grateful that women's boxing will be held at the 2012 London Olympics.

"It's opened a lot of doors for female boxing and the sport has become more recognised and will continue to bring more opportunities," she said.

Victory this week will qualify her for the world championships in March in China. "Boxing is very hard and you need to train a lot," she said. "But it's great to be involved in, especially now it's an Olympic sport."
