Tigers limping after win

01 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
WESTS Tigers secured a home final after disposing of the Melbourne Storm 26-14 at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday but the injury toll is mounting on the eve of the NRL finals.

At the business end of the season, the Tigers are second on 34 points and have one match to play against Gold Coast Titans this Friday at Skilled Park, Robina, Queensland at 7.35pm.

The third-placed Titans are on 32 points and also assured of a home final.

The team which finishes in the top four get a home final under the NRL rules. Leichhardt Oval is the likely venue for the Tigers.

A top-two finish for the Tigers guarantees the side safety in the first week of the finals with the first two teams unable to be eliminated under the McIntyre system.

But coach Tim Sheens was left to assess the walking wounded after the gritty win over the Storm before a sell-out 20,168 crowd at Leichhardt Oval.

Centre Chris Lawrence broke his jaw and had surgery on Sunday night. The class attacking player is out for the season. Lawrence, who had carried the facial injury into the match, left the field after being tackled by Storm prop and former Tigers' hardman Jeff Lima.

Prop Bryce Gibbs (knee) and Liam Fulton, (calf muscle) who both missed the match with injuries, could be available for the Titans' game. They will be checked by the club doctor during the week. Veteran prop John Skandalis (hip) is doubtful.

Skandalis left the field and had his hip heavily packed in ice to treat the hip problem.

Fullback Wade McKinnon, back after a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, aggravated the problem late in the match and was also replaced. He will be checked if he's fit to play before the Titans' clash.

Benji Marshall was at his wizardy best scoring a hat-trick of tries and dazzling the Storm defence with his skill, passing, running and speed.

Wests Tigers' skipper Robbie Farah said the big crowd provided the impetus for the victory in the second half.

``We were a bit flat in the first half from the Parramatta game the previous week.''

Coach Sheens said Geoff Daniela and Mitchell Brown would come under selection consideration for the injured Lawrence.

``There'll be players that will step up and be very keen to get an opportunity to play next week,'' Sheens said.

Sheens said he gave his team a spray at half-time and demanded a better performance in the second half.
