Tennis ace studies online

01 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
TENNIS prodigy Aleks Arcaba, 16, doesn't sit in the school classroom with her peers anymore.

But the teenager hopes to hit plenty of aces with her education. She fulfils her academic requirements in a different way.

Aleks, who is in year 11, will study for her Higher School Certificate next year.

The articulate student does her academic work online through the Sydney Distance Education School.

``I enjoy doing my schoolwork this way,'' she said. ``I have teachers who work with me and assess my work and I have assignments that have to be done by certain times and I also do the exams.

``Doing my schoolwork this way allows me time for training and playing tennis.''

As a youngster she attended Marsden Road Public School then went to Westfields Sports High School from years7 to 9.

But her desire to play against elite level girls' and in women's tournaments with an eye to gaining entry onto the professional tour, women's requires her to travel and train almost full-time.

``When I finish my high-school studies I would like to look at a career in sports physiotherapy or in sports science or perhaps physical-education teaching.''

The 178-centimetre tall right-hander said she is back in full training and ready to play tournaments after a lengthy stint recovering from knee surgery.

``I haven't played for a year because of the injury but the knee is getting stronger now.

``My ambition has always been to play on the women's professional tour.''

Aleks is coached by Steve Randjelovic at Five Dock Tennis Centre and she also regularly practises at Bigge Park Tennis Centre.

Former men's professional Goran Bosalevski oversees her practise sessions at the Liverpool courts.
