FORTY-FIVE days to go to the new Liverpool City Netball Association season. The official opening date for the winter competition is Saturday, March 24. A colourful march-past involving all clubs takes place before the games begin and the players are counting down the days until they proudly don their club colours at the LCNA headquarters at Woodward Park.
LCNA secretary Estelle Lawler said clubs are registering players and teams.
"The new season isn't far away and the clubs start training in February," she said. "Last year we had 11 clubs enter teams in our competitions. We had more than 1500 registered players participate.
"Judging by the feedback I've had from the clubs in recent weeks we expect between 1600 and 1700 players on the courts this year.
"That's a good increase in playing numbers and a credit to Liverpool netball and the popularity of the sport."
She said a new club, Infusion is joining the ranks.
The clubs competing this year are Infusion, OLMC, Cabra Vale Diggers, Club Marconi, Prestons, Miller, Mounties, Moorebank, Lakeside, Cabra Leagues, Pearlers and Liverpool Catholic Club.
Prestons is an LCNA foundation club. They joined in the inaugural season in 1968.
"Prestons was the first club then Mounties and Miller followed the next year, in 1969."
Lawler said the LCNA will have three state league teams in second, third and fourth divisions in the Netball NSW representative competitions this winter.
"Gradings for these teams will be finalised in February. Liverpool has proved at state age and state league representative levels in recent years that we're a strong association. There's plenty of netball talent around."
Lawler said the LCNA grand-final day at Woodward Park will be Saturday, August 25.
