LIVERPOOL'S Whitlam Leisure Centre's $5million renovations are complete and the centre is open to the public in time for spring and summer.
The $5million funding was made available through the Federal Government's stimulus package.
Whitlam Leisure Centre manager Nathan Elliott said the renovations have enhanced the centre's status as one of Liverpool's top sports venues.
``The capital works projects addressed some key areas of the facility to ensure the long-term provision of leisure services at the centre,'' he said. ``The major improvements to the aquatics facilities were completed last week and the pools have now been reopened for business. These improvements included new roofing over the aquatics and health club.
``The aquatics facilities also received significant renovations to the change rooms and new flooring around the indoor pools.
``We're really pleased with the renovations to the aquatic facilities. There's an abundance of natural light throughout the pool hall due to the innovative roof design.''
The Liverpool Basketball Association, who are tenants in the centre and have an office on the premises, are also benefitting from the revamped courts, bright new lightning and new seating.
The main arena is also used for sports events and exhibitions.
Elliott said since the pools re-opened last week the centre has had a surge in patronage with many enquiries about the facility being made at the centre.
``The Whitlam Leisure Centre provides its members with the unique variety of facilities in a low-key relaxed environment.
``Many patrons have visited the centre for over 10 years. It's like a second home to some of them.''
Elliott said the fully equipped health club combined with the extensive aquatic facilities means that the Whitlam Leisure Centre is the ideal place for Liverpool residents to spend recreation time.
``Services such as our Learn to Swim programs also play an important role in the safety and development of the children.''
A free public open day will be held on Saturday, September4.
``We're inviting the people of Liverpool to join us for our open day which will be a family day full of fun.''
Activities include the jumping castle, face-painting and sausage sizzle. There will be free fitness assessments and health club for those who register beforehand.
