What does urban music look like?

02 Apr, 2010 01:04 PM
If urban music was a person, what would they look like and how would they act?

A gangster? A soulful manifester? A high rider? Someone with sway moves or someone who shares their thoughts on life?

All of the above and more because urban culture allows people to express themselves through a number of different ways but at the same time identify with the shared views of others.

RNB diva Kelly Rowland may not wear baggy low jeans and act gangster like Akon but in her soulful sophistication she can re-interpret the emotive suggestions of his performance because she can identify with the urban culture behind it.

Both artists are performing in the national urban music tour, Supafest which hits our shores this month.

The show will be on at Sydney on Friday, April 16 and will also include Pitbull, Sean Paul, Eve, Jay Sean, Dj Nino Brown and Chris Sorbello.

Each artists brings their own individual urban expression from latin hip-hop, rap, RNB-pop, soul and contemporary.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this show is the urban fusion that will encapsulate the audience.

The cultural diversities and the similarities.

How broad and specific urban music culture could be.

Urban culture has become an integral part of expression for many young people and a creative outlet for their self definition.

It is for this reason that urban music artists have the power to influence the thoughts, acts and lives of so many people.

Kelly Rowland can change someone's life and impact on them for a long time and it takes just one quick moment while she is performing on stage.

In that one moment a young person who is watching her and appreciates could identify with what she is saying or doing.

And that is how life changing moments can happen, how experiences in life can help us define who we are.

So the experience of the Supafest urban culture explosion will not only be an amazing night of entertainment, but will provide the audience with plenty of opportunities to experience something that will impact on their lives forever.

To me, urban culture is simply the life many have chosen to live.
