Wallacia location rumoured for report Opposition to airport

WHILE we thought we were clear of flight paths, it seems our region is still on the radar to house a second Sydney airport.

After a strong community campaign against Badgerys Creek as a location, a government taskforce report to be released later this year is tipped to recommend the area host a second Sydney airport.

A news report late last year stated the taskforce found the Luddenham, Wallacia and Greendale area to be the prime location.

In 2009, the federal government and the then state Labor government agreed on a joint study to develop a plan for Sydney, a state planning department spokesman said.

He said the report, which will be presented to both governments, has yet to be finalised.

The Liberal senator for western Sydney, Marise Payne, said she was concerned by reports the area was preferred: "With its ever-growing population, this is not the right place to build a major international airport."

State Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies said: "An international airport here would cause significant grief."

A spokeswoman for federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese said: "Sydney needs a second airport sooner rather than later.

"That's why we established a joint taskforce with the NSW government."

State Planning and Infrastructure Minister Brad Hazzard said residents should understand the report was being prepared by senior public servants independent of political input and was initiated by the former state government with the federal Labor government. He had major reservations about any recommendation for an airport in western Sydney.

Lindsay MP David Bradbury also opposed an airport in the west: "It would be a major threat to our environment and quality of life. For as long as I represent this community the people of Lindsay will continue to have a strong advocate in Canberra to stand against any proposal for an airport here."
