Tips to save money

01 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
SUNDAY, September 12, is Sustainable House Day and to mark the occasion, the Association of Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA) has

10 simple tips to make your home more energy efficient and save hundreds of dollars every year.

ABSA chief executive officer Alison Carmichael said Sustainable House Day gave people the opportunity to look inside houses that have been designed, built or fitted out with sustainability in mind, and to exchange ideas about saving energy.

Organisers expect to have 250 energy efficient homes open their doors around Australia on Sustainable House Day and entry to homes is free.

ABSA's members help individuals use energy more efficiently and save money in the process.

``For example, ABSA assessors can visit existing homes and calculate the building's energy and water use, and provide advice on how to improve environmental performance,'' Ms Carmichael said.

The Home Sustainability Assessment Scheme (HSAS) was set up as part of the Federal Government's Green Loans program. While loans are no longer available, free assessments are still funded.

Ms Carmichael said even before householders had an assessment done, there were many simple things they could do to make existing homes more energy efficient.

Install a AAA showerhead save up to $100 per annum.

Get rid of that old second fridge save up to $200.

Use energy efficient light bulbs (CFLs) save up to $50.
