A MAN slid open the back door of a Hinchinbrook home last Wednesday and attacked a 17-year-old girl who was home alone.
She looked up from the TV and in a mirror saw a man standing behind her in the Bower Bird Street house about 1pm.
He grabbed her but she punched and kicked him to break free from his grasp and ran to hide in a bedroom and rang a friend.
The man found her and tried to drag her out but gave up and ran out through the rear door.
The girl's friend came to help and rang police.
Green Valley police commander Superintendent Mark Szalajko said the girl was ``quite a brave young woman''.
``She was a bit traumatised and distressed and had a few scratches as a result of the scuffle,''
he said.
``[The intruder] was probably trying to steal property but found her at home.
``We don't believe he had a sexual motive.''
Mr Szalajko declined to comment on whether the intruder stole anything. Police spoke to neighbours and searched the area without success.
The girl described him as aged 35 to 40, about 180centimetres tall, of thin build with medium-length hair and brown eyes and a goatee.
He was wearing a khaki green shirt, black cargo pants and black joggers.
Anyone who saw a man fitting the description, or has information about his identity or whereabouts, can contact Green Valley police on 96071799 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
