THE first day of primary school can be daunting for many youngsters.
But Raif Haack, 4, has nothing to worry about thanks to a transition program.
Thomas Hassall Anglican College's "prep" program involves children enrolled in classes the year before they start kindergarten.
The program is conducted by trained kindergarten and primary-school teachers and is designed to ensure these young kids make the change to kindergarten a lot easier.
Rebecca Haack, 27, of Mount Pritchard, said the program will teach her son the routine structure of school and let him start kindergarten positively.
"I think the program will be a great opportunity for Raif to settle in and mature and know what to expect before he officially starts school next year," Mrs Haack said.
"My first son, Lachlan, 6, also did this program before starting kindergarten and I think it was well worth it because he adapted better than those who jumped straight into kindergarten."
The program runs three days a week — full school hours — where children are taught numeracy, literacy and creative arts and they experience the school environment.
"He will learn how to read and write and bring homework home to do," she said.
"These kids also get to wear the school uniform, attend school assemblies with the rest of the school and share the same library.
"I'm very proud of Raif and it's always a sad moment when your kids start school but he's excited to go and be with his older brother."
