AFTER being unemployed for almost a year Kasandra Floric now has a new job, in more ways then one.
Her role was described as falling into the category of a "green job" by MTC Work Solutions Y Green co-ordinator Steven Fleischmann.
"The program is designed to give young people skills, including communication and organisational skills, that they can use in a variety of work," Mr Fleischmann said.
"The young people go around the homes and give people a sustainability assessment and provide them with some advice about what they can to do make their energy use more efficient and their home more environmentally friendly."
Mr Fleischmann said the six-month Y Green program took in young people aged mostly in their early 20s who were unskilled and had been unemployed since leaving high school.
Ms Floric, 18, of Lurnea said she studied at Miller TAFE after leaving school but did not finish her course. She later applied to MTC, a network that helps unemployed people find work, for assistance.
"It's been really hard to me to find work, because I have no work experience. I've only worked at McDonald's before," Ms Floric said.
"I've learnt a lot in this program and I find all of the information about how to make your home environmentally sustainable really interesting."
She said that she may pursue a green job in the future but is also interested in animal studies.
Mr Fleischmann said many local young people were in the same position as Ms Floric. When they applied for jobs their lack of experience and references was a real obstacle.
