At 4.20pm a 39-year-old man from Cambridge Park was driving a red Mitsubishi Magna sedan north along The Northern Road at Luddenham.

As he rounded a right hand bend, the vehicle struck the rear of a passing blue Mazda sedan and careered into the path of oncoming traffic.

The Magna collided head-on with a grey Holden Acclaim. A silver Holden Commodore following the Acclaim took evasive action but suffered slight damage in the incident.

Other motorists freed the injured man from the Mitsubishi and commenced CPR.

St Marys police and police rescue officers arrived at the scene, along with fire crews and ambulance paramedics.

The paramedics continued CPR but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 23-year-old Holden Acclaim driver, from Luddenham, was trapped in the wreckage.

She was freed and taken to Westmead Hospital in a satisfactory condition with injuries to her hip and right leg.

No-one else was injured in the incident.

Traffic was diverted around the scene for more than four hours.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
