THE multicultural thread that pulls Liverpool together was made stronger on the nation's birthday on January 26.
Fifty-two Liverpudlians were granted citizenship on Australia Day.
Liverpool mayor Wendy Waller welcomed the new citizens who represented 22 nationalities.
"This is a time we can reflect on what's great about being Australian," Ms Waller said.
Enci Sapari arrived from Indonesia in 2005 with her husband and two eldest children as refugees.
She said being an Australian citizen was something she had wanted for a long time.
"I'm so excited, I love Australia," she said.
Her husband Basim Bwadih, who gained his citizenship a few months earlier, originally travelled from Iraq to Indonesia where the couple met.
They celebrated Australia Day with their four children.
"Australia is a free country and it's democratic," Mr Bwadih said.
"We moved here for a better life."
Mr Bwadih said he felt human again, now that his rights had been restored.
Liverpool Australia Day ambassador Joanna McMillan congratulated the new citizens and admitted that she too was an "adopted Australian", from Scotland.
"It's my thirteenth year here in Australia," the nutritionist and healthy lifestyle expert said.
"We have chosen Australia as our country and chosen to make it our home so today is an extra special day for us," she said.
"Australia is truly one of the best places to live in the world."
A regular on the Nine Network and the Today show's nutritionist, Dr McMillan also spoke about how lucky Australians are to have access to fresh food and produce.
"I never tried a mango until I came here," she said.
Victoria Avenue, Michael Teterin and Descendance performed.
Werriwa MP Laurie Ferguson and Fowler MP Chris Hayes also attended the event.
