Blaze regarded as suspicious

01 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
THE State Crime Command has assembled a strike force to investigate the fire that destroyed the Liverpool Council chambers.

Strike Force Gideon comprises members of the state's arson squad and detectives from various south-west Sydney police stations.

A spokeswoman for the NSW Police Property Crime Squad said the fire was being treated as suspicious, but the cause of the fire, or whether or not it was caused by arson, was still not confirmed.

``Forensic results are yet to be finalised,'' she said.

She said that operational information about people being interviewed and the direction that the investigation was headed would not be released.

``Investigations are continuing and there is no more information at this stage.''

A Liverpool Council spokeswoman said rumours about council staff being allowed to enter the ruined structure of the building to recover personal items were not correct.
